How to write an amount in words
On a cheque or contract, the words are what legally count — the figures are just a cross-check. Spell out the whole amount, then handle the cents.
1. Whole amount first
Write the dollars (or euros, pounds…) in words: 1,250 → One Thousand Two Hundred Fifty. American style omits the internal "and"; British style often keeps it (one hundred and fifty).
2. Then the cents
In English, cents go as a fraction over 100: …and 56/100, or …and 00/100 when there are none. Other languages spell them out — French et zéro centime, German und null Cent.
3. Fill the line
Draw a line through any empty space after the words so the amount cannot be altered. This is why cheques traditionally end with asterisks or a long dash.
4. Match the local rules
French invoices use a comma decimal (12,50 €); German writes the number as one compound word; Chinese financial documents use the formal 大写 numerals with 元角分. This tool applies each rule automatically — switch the language & currency selector to compare. For Roman numerals instead, use the Roman numerals converter.
